जैसा कि पिछली ब्लॉग पोस्टों / blog posts में मैंने बताया है कि भारत में केवल 10% पाठक ही ई-पुस्तकों को पढ़ते हैं। अधिकाँश पाठकों को निराश न होना पड़े, इसके लिए पुस्तक के प्रिंट वर्जन / print version को पोथी डॉट कॉम स्वयंप्रकाशन के प्लेटफोर्म / self publishing platform of pothi.com  से छापने का निर्णय लिया गया। कभी वह एम एस वर्ड की डॉक्स सी फाईल / Doxc file of MS word को सीधे ही ले लेता था, तो कभी उसे पीडीएफ / PDF में कन्वर्ट / convert करके अपलोड / upload करने की हिदायत देता था। वर्ड फाईल को पीडीएफ में कन्वर्ट करने से पहले प्रिंट बुक के लिए फोर्मेट / format करना जरूरी होता है, क्योंकि पीडीएफ फाईल की फोर्मेटिंग को हम बदल नहीं सकते। इसी तरह वर्ड फाईल को पीडीएफ फाईल में बदलना आसान होता है, पर पीडीएफ फाईल को पुनः वर्ड फाईल में पूरी शुद्धता से बदलना लगभग असंभव सा ही होता है। उसके लिए सब्सक्रिप्शन / subscription पर पीडीएफ एलिमेंट / PDF element को खरीदना पड़ता है। उससे पीडीएफ फाईल को वर्ड फाईल में कन्वर्ट किया जा सकता है। हालांकि उससे आसान, कारगर व मुफ्त का विकल्प ओसीआर है। ओसीआर (ऑप्टिकल रिकोग्निशन सिस्टम) के बारे में आप मेरी अलग से वेबपोस्ट पढ़ सकते हैं। कमियाँ तो रह ही जाती हैं। इसलिए किसी भी लेख की मूल वर्ड फाईल को जरूर बेक अप / स्टोर / back up करके रख लेना चाहिए।

प्रिंट के हिसाब से वर्ड फाईल को अलग से फोर्मेट करना पड़ता है, क्योंकि ई-बुक का फोर्मेट प्रिंट बुक के लिए नहीं चलता। पहले मैं वर्ड के ‘पेज सेटअप / page setup’ पर गया। वहां पर ‘मार्जिन / margin’ टेब / tab को प्रेस / press किया। अपर / upper मार्जिन व बोटम / bottom मार्जिन को ०.5 इंच, अन्दर के / इनसाइड मार्जिन को ०.75 इंच, बाहर के / आऊटसाईड मार्जिन को ०.4 इंच, व गटर को ०.3 इंच रखा। गटर पुस्तक के आमने-सामने के पृष्ठों के बीच की नाली होती है, जिसमें कई बार अक्षर दब जाते हैं। इसीलिए उसे पर्याप्त चौड़ा रखा जाता है। मेरे द्वारा ‘मिरर मार्जिन / mirror margin’ सेलेक्ट किया गया। मिरर मार्जिन किताबों के लिए विशेष होते हैं। इसमें किताब के आमने-सामने वाले पृष्ठ एक-दूसरे के दर्पण-चित्र की तरह दिखते हैं। उसी पेज सेटअप पर पोर्ट्रेट व व्होल डोक्यूमेंट / portrait and whole document को सेलेक्ट किया। साथ में, हेडर / header- ०.2″ फ्रॉम टॉप / from top, व फूटर footer- ०.2″ फ्रॉम बोटम / from bottom रखा। यह पृष्ठ-सेटअप 300 पृष्ठों वाली मेरी पुस्तक के लिए पर्याप्त है। पृष्ठ संख्याओं में परिवर्तन के साथ, केवल अंदर के मार्जिन और गटर थोड़े-बहुत बदलते हैं, अन्य मार्जिन नहीं। याद रहे कि माइक्रोसोफ्ट वर्ड के 2007 व उसके ऊपर के वर्जन में डिफाल्ट पेज मार्जिन्स चारों ओर 1 इंच (2.54 cm) होता है।

फिर में ‘पेपर / paper’ टेब पर गया। पहले कस्टम साईज / custom size सेलेक्ट किया गया। फिर पेपर वाईडथ /  paper width को 6″ व पेपर हाईट को 9″ रखा, क्योंकि 6″x 9″ की पुस्तकें सर्वाधिक लोकप्रिय हैं। उस पर ये सेटिंग्स / settings खुद ही लागू थीं- ‘फर्स्ट पेज-डिफाल्ट ट्रे सेलेक्टड / first page default selected, बोथ फॉर फर्स्ट एंड अदर पेजिज / both for first and other pages तथा व्होल डोक्यूमेंट / whole document।

तब में ‘लेआऊट / layout’ टेब / tab पर गया। सेक्शन स्टार्ट / section start- ओड पेज / odd page। इसका तात्पर्य है कि पुस्तक का प्रारंभ ओड पेज (1,3 आदि) से होगा, जो पुस्तकों में अच्छा लगता है। इसमें पुस्तक के बाएँ पृष्ठ पर ईवन नंबर / even number (2,4 आदि) होता है, और दाएं पृष्ठ पर ओड नंबर की पेज संख्या। वर्ड डोक्यूमेंट की शीर्ष-पट्टी में स्थित हेडर बटन (पुस्तक का शीर्षतम रिक्त स्थान) में जाकर, हेडर में पुस्तक के शीर्षक का नाम लिख दिया गया, और पुस्तक के फूटर में (पुस्तक का निम्नतम रिक्त स्थान) उपशीर्षक का। उससे प्रत्येक पेज पर वे नाम वैसे ही आ गए। एक महत्त्वपूर्ण बात और है। यदि हम वर्ड फाईल में embed fonts ऑप्शन को चालू करें, तो वह पीडीएफ फाईल में सर्वोत्तम तरीके से कन्वर्ट हो जाती है। उससे पीडीएफ को पुनः वर्ड फाईल में कन्वर्ट करना भी आसानी से संभव हो जाता है। इसके लिए word option में जाकर save – embed fonts – embed only the characters used in the document (best for reducing file size), इन बटनों को इसी उपर्युक्त क्रम में दबाएँ। फिर उस फोर्मेटिड बुक रुपी वर्ड डोक्युमेंट को एवरनोट में स्टोर कर दिया गया, ताकि वह भविष्य में भी काम आता। फिर उस वर्ड डोक्युमेंट को ओनलाईन पीडीएफ कन्वर्टर / online pdf converter से पीडीएफ में कन्वर्ट कर दिया गया। परन्तु उसमें बहुत सी गलतियाँ थीं, विशेषतः बहुत से अक्षरों की बनावट दोषपूर्ण थीं, जो मुझे पुस्तक को पढ़ते हुए चेक करते हुए पता चला। अंततः मैंने गूगल ड्राईव / google drive के पीडीएफ कन्वर्टर का प्रयोग किया। उसमें हिंदी के सभी अक्षर व चिन्ह पूर्णतया शुद्ध निकले। इसके लिए हमें डोक्युमेंट को गूगल ड्राईव पर अपलोड करना पड़ता है। फिर ‘ओपन विद / open with’ दबाकर पीडीएफ कन्वर्टर एप / app को क्लिक / click करना चाहिए। यदि वह लिस्ट / list में न आए, तो “कनेक्ट न्यू / मोर एप / connect new or more app” को क्लिक करके पीडीएफ कन्वर्टर को सर्च / search करना चाहिए, और उसे लिस्ट में जोड़ देना चाहिए। इसी तरह यदि हम ओपन विद की लिस्ट में गूगल ट्रांसलेट / google translate को क्लिक करें, तो उससे हम डोक्युमेंट को किसी भी भाषा में ट्रांसलेट कर सकते हैं। यद्यपि वह ट्रांसलेशन दोषपूर्ण होती है, इसलिए बाद में उसे हाथ से करेक्ट / correct करना पड़ता है। फिर भी इससे बहुत से समय की व दिमाग की भी बचत हो जाती है। शर्त यह है कि एक बार में अधिक से अधिक लगभग वर्ड के 80 पेज ही ट्रांसलेट हो सकते हैं। इसलिए पुस्तक को टुकड़ों में ट्रांसलेट करना पड़ता है। ओपन विद पीडीएफ कन्वर्टर को क्लिक करके एक विंडो / window आती है, उसमें फिर से ब्राऊस / browse करके कम्प्युटर / computer की किसी ड्राईव / drive में स्टोर्ड उस बुक डोक्युमेंट / stored that book document को  फिर से अपलोड करना पड़ता है। तभी “कन्वर्ट / convert” नाम का क्लिकेबल बटन / clickable button आता है। फिर उस पीडीएफ डोक्युमेंट को खोल लें। उसके शीर्ष पर दाईं तरफ एक डाऊन एरो / down arrow का निशान होगा। उसको क्लिक करने से वह डोक्युमेंट कम्प्युटर के डाऊनलोड फोल्डर / download folder में डाऊनलोड हो जाएगा। उस डोक्युमेंट में वही सेटिंगज / फोर्मेटिंग रहेंगी, जो उसके उत्पादक वर्ड डोक्युमेंट में रखी गई थीं।

अब पोथीडॉटकोम / pothi.com में जाएं। लॉग इन / login करने के बाद कहीं पर प्रिंट ओन डिमांड / print on demand बटन पर जाकर उसमें दिए गए निर्देशों का पालन करें, और बुक को पब्लिश कर लें। 1-2 दिन में वह खरीदी जाने के लिए तैयार हो जाएगी। नए-2 स्वयंप्रकाशक के लिए कवर को अपलोड करने से अच्छा तो इनबिल्ट कवर डिजाईनर की सहायता लेना ही ठीक रहता है। उसके लिए अच्छा सा कवर-फोटो / cover photo or image अपलोड करें। वह कवर फोटो पुस्तक के अंतिम पृष्ठ की पिछली तरफ लग कर बेक कवर back cover बन जाएगा। फ्रंट कवर / front cover पर पुस्तक के शीर्षक, उपशीर्षक, लेखक आदि का नाम लिखें। साथ में, पुस्तक की रिब / rib (पुस्तक की बाईंडिंग वाली केंद्रीय व पीछे की ओर की पट्टी) पर भी शीर्षक व लेखक का नाम लिखें।

प्रिंट ऑन डिमांड से चाहो तो जितना मर्जी बुक की कॉपियां छपवा सकते हो, यहाँ तक कि अकेली पुस्तक भी। परंतु इससे सामूहिक / पारंपरिक छपाई की अपेक्षा पुस्तक कुछ अधिक महंगी पड़ती है। फिर भी इसके अनेक लाभ होतेे हैं। इससे कागज की बर्बादी नहीं होती, क्योंकि जरूरत पड़ने परही पुस्तक को छपाया जाता है, और एडवांस में पुस्तक को छपाने की आवश्यकता नहीं होती। इससे कुल लागत खर्च में भी बहुत कमी आती है, व पबलिशर की मनमानी भी नहीं चलती।

Towards the print book

As I mentioned in the previous blog posts, only 10% of readers in India read e-books. Most readers did not have to be disappointed, for this it was decided to print the print version of the book with the Pothi.com’s self publication platform. Sometimes that used to take MS Word’s Doxc file directly, then that had ever instructed to upload it in PDF format. Before converting word files into PDFs, it is necessary to format that for a print book, because we cannot change the formatting of PDF file. Likewise, it is easy to convert the word file to a PDF file, but it is almost impossible to convert the PDF file to a word file fully again. For that, the PDF Element has to be bought on the subscription. Herein document can be converted to a PDF file from a word file. Better, more effective and free option is using OCR. Read my separate webpost on OCR (OPTICAL RECOGNITION SYSTEM). However, the shortcomings still remain. Therefore, the original word file of any article must be backed up / stored properly.

Word file has to be formatted separately according to the print, as the format of the e-book will not be available for the print book. First I went to the ‘page setup’ of the word. Pressed the ‘margin’ tab on there. Fixed top margin and bottom margin to 0.5″, Inside Margin 0.75 in., Outside margin 0.4 inches, and gutter was kept 0.3 inches. Gutter of book is the drain between the face-to-face pages, in which the letters are suppressed little or more. That is why it is kept wide enough. I selected ‘Mirror Margin’. Mirror margins are special for books. In this, face-to-face pages of the book look like each other’s mirror-picture. Select the ‘Portrait’ and ‘Whole Document’ on the same page setup. Together, Header-0.2″ From Top, and Footer-0.2″ from Bottom. This page setup is enough for my book with 300 pages. With change in page numbers, only the inside margin and gutter vary little or more, not the other margins. Remember that the default page margins in Microsoft Word 2007 and above are 1 inch (2.54 cm) wide all around.

Then went on the ‘paper’ tab. The first custom selection was selected. Then the paper Width kept 6″ and paper height as 9″, because the books of 6″x 9″ are the most popular. These settings were applied to them themselves – ‘First page – Default tray selected, Both for the first and other pages’ and the ‘Whole document’.

Then went to the ‘layout’ tab. Section Start- Odd Page. This means that the book will start with Odd Page (1,3 etc.), which is good in books. It contains the Even numbers (2,4 etc.) on the left page of the book, and the page numbers of the odd category on the right page. In the Header button located in the top-bar of the Word document, the title of the book was written in the header, and the subtitle of the book is in the footer (the lowest spacing of the book) . From that on each page, those names came in the same way. Word document converted to PDF will be best if “embed font” option is enabled in MS Word while saving the parent word document. With this, converting pdf file to word file becomes possible easily. For this, ‘word option’ button is to be clicked, and then save – embed fonts – embed only the characters used in the document (best for reducing file size), these buttons are to be pressed in this above sequence.

Then that formatted book was stored in Evernote so that it could work in the future. Then the Word document was converted to PDF from the online PDF Converter. But there were many mistakes in it, especially the text of many letters was faulty, which showed me on checking while reading the book. Eventually I used Google Drive’s PDF Converter. In it all the Hindi letters and symbols are completely pure. For this, we have to upload the document to Google Drive. Then press the ‘Open with the PDF Converter’ button. If it does not come in the list, then you should search the PDF converter by clicking the “Connect New / More App”, and add it to the list. Similarly, if we click on Google Translate in the list of ‘Open With’, we can translate the document in any language. Although the translation is faulty, it has to be corrected by hand afterwards. Yet it also saves a lot of time and brains. The condition is that approximately more than 80 pages of the word cannot be translated at a time. Therefore, the book has to be translated into pieces. Clicking ‘Open with PDF Converter’ comes a window, then has to browse it again and upload that stored book document in a drive of a computer. Only then clickable button named “convert” comes. Then open that PDF document. On top of it there will be a down arrow on the right. Clicking that will download it in the ‘download’ folder of the computer. That document will have the same settings / formatting, which was placed in its raw word document.

Now go to Pothi.com. After logging in, go to the ‘print on demand button’ anywhere and follow the instructions given in it, and publish the book. In 1-2 days that will be ready to be bought. Than uploading the cover by the newer self publisher, it is better to get help from an inbuilt cover designer. Upload a nice cover photo for that. The cover photo will become a back cover at the last page of the book. Enter the name of the book’s title, subtitle, author etc. on the front cover. Together, write the name of the title and author on the book’s rib (the central and rear side band of the book).

You can print copies of the book as much as you want, even the only book too with print on demand service. But this type book is more expensive than mass / traditional printing. Yet it has many benefits. This is not a waste of paper, as the book is printed only when it is needed immediately to read, and there is no need to print the book in Advance. It also highly reduces the total cost of investment, and also the publisher does not have the arbitrariness.
